The history of creation of FSRC «Construction» ascends to 1927, when the State Institute of Structures (GIS) was founded.
The basic tasks of GIS were perfection of construction on the basis of study and development of new building materials, industrial structures and methods of construction, and also training of qualified staff in this area.
During these years the experimental and theoretical researches were carried out, results of which were the creation of scientific and technical basis of industrial construction for the country and the basic building codes and standards for industry and textbooks for higher schools. The large scientific schools were set up, on the basis of which many generations of the experts of high qualification have grown.
By the professors A.F. Loleit, A.A. Gvozdev, P.L. Pasternak, V. I. Mourashev, B.G. Scramtaev and others the principles of design and calculation of reinforced concrete structures and technologies of concrete were developed; by N.S. Streletsky, V.M. Keldysh, V.A. Baldin, E.I. Belenya, G.K. Geniev and others - basis of design and calculation of metal structures; by N.M. Gersevanov, G.K. Klein, N.A. Tsytovich, etc. - mechanics of soils and basis of design of the bases and footings; by G.G. Karlsen, Yu.M. Ivanov, etc. - basis of calculation and design of wooden structures; by B.G. Korenev, I.M. Rabinovitz, V.Z. Vlasov, A.R. Rzhanitsyn, etc. - the modern methods of the building mechanics were created.
In 1930 GIS was renamed in VIS (All-Union state scientific - experimental institute of civil, industrial and engineering structures), and in 1932 it again was renamed in TSNIPS (Central institute of industrial structures).
From the moment of TSNIPS creation the scientific works were carried out in close connection with higher schools, including such as MISI, MVTU, MIIT, VIA, etc., where the scientists of the Centre "Construction" lead simultaneously teaching activity. The extensive creative communications with a higher school are kept up this time.
At creation in 1957 of Academy of Construction and Architecture the TSNIPS was divided into three institutes: of Concrete and Reinforced Concrete (NIIZHB), of Building Structures (TSNIISK named after V. Koucherenko) and of Bases and Underground Structures (NIIOSP named after N. Gersevanov).
In 1994, after almost forty years, the united research organization - Scientific Research Centre “Construction” (FSRC «Construction») was reconstructed, where TSNIISK NIIZHB and NIIOSP, as well as an Experimental Plant for trial structures, products and equipment ZOKIO are on the rights of branches.
FSRC «Construction» is in departmental submission of Federal Agency on Construction and Housing Complex. By the order of Government of Russian Federation from December 31, 2004 it is referred to number of the enterprises having the status of a State Science Centres of Russian Federation.
The basic tasks of the Centre are: realization of theoretical, search and applied researches, design and technological works related to constructions and operation of buildings, structures and their foundations, and also technology of construction, manufacturing of building materials and structures, development of building codes and standards for construction, providing adequate strength and reliability of building structures and foundations, their seismic resistance and fire safety.

FSRC «Construction», having in its staff  highly skilled  professionals of about 1300personnel, including 44 doctors and 202 candidates of sciences, is currently the scientific and technical leader in a building complex of Russia.
The Centre participates in development and carries out scientific and technical support of a number of  federal programs, among which are “ Researches and development upon priority  directions of  a science and engineering”, “ Affordable dwelling "," Seismic safety of territory of Russia ",
" Preservation and development of architecture of historical cities » etc.
On the basis of the newest scientific achievements in the branches of the Centre the programs are made and the computer aided designs of various types of buildings, including unique ones, with the use of metal structures, reinforced concrete, stone masonry, laminated glued wood and plastic are implemented taking into account various kinds of loadings, including dynamic and seismic, as well as caused by alterations of soils properties and displacements. The programs consider also conditions of maintenance of fire safety.
The scientists of the Centre participate in the activity of some international organizations on construction, such as ISO, RILEM, ISSMGE, ERMCO and others.
